Are you wondering where your PhD can take you?
Building a career outside academia can feel challenging, especially for PhD students preparing to enter the Swedish job market for the first time. This lunch lecture is designed for doctoral researchers in molecular biology who want to understand how their scientific expertise can translate into careers beyond academia.
Naturvetarna, the Swedish trade union for natural scientists, will give an overview of labour‑market trends relevant to molecular biologists and other life‑science graduates. Drawing on data from their member surveys, they will discuss salary developments, typical career paths outside academia, and what employers in Sweden look for. You will also receive practical guidance on how to strengthen your competitiveness when applying for non‑academic roles, including insights into sectors where microbiology‑related skills are in high demand.
The lecture will also introduce the role of labour unions in Sweden—how they support early‑career researchers, promote fair working conditions, and contribute to long‑term improvements in the work environment for both international and Swedish scientists.
Date: Tuesday, 21 April
Time: 12:00–13:00
Location: E306 at MBW (Svante Arrhenius Väg 20C, Frescati Campus SU)
All PhD students connected to the MBM PhD Board at Stockholm University are welcome. The lecture will be held in English. An online option will be available.
Who are Naturvetarna? Naturvetarna is the trade union for academics in the natural sciences. They represent over 37,000 members across fields such as biology, microbiology, chemistry, geology, physics, mathematics, and environmental sciences.
