The legislative changes apply to those who become unemployed after October 1, 2025. For those who already have a decision on benefits, the old rules apply.
How your unemployment insurance will be affected
The main changes are:
- You qualify based on previous income. This means that in the year before you become unemployed (the so-called qualifying period), you must have earned a total of at least SEK 120 000 and that you must have earned at least SEK 11 000 for at least 4 of the 12 months.
- The length of membership affects the level of benefits. To be entitled to 80% compensation (full compensation), you must have been a member for at least 12 months, 6 months membership means 60% compensation and 0-5 months 50% compensation.
- The benefit level is reduced by 10 percentage points after 100 benefit days and by 5 percentage points every 100 days thereafter.
- The number of months of income determines how long the benefit period can be. The more months of income during the qualifying period, the longer the period. The maximum number of days is 300, and those who meet the alternative rule (4 consecutive months of earning at least SEK 11 000 per month) can receive unemployment benefit for a maximum of 66 days.

How income insurance is affected
For those who have an income above the unemployment insurance fund's ceiling of SEK 34,000 per month (as of October 1), income insurance is particularly important. To receive compensation, you must have been a member of both Naturvetarna and the unemployment insurance fund for one year. Naturvetarna's income insurance, which is included in your membership, covers a maximum of 80 percent of your unemployment insurance basic salary up to SEK 100,000 per month gross and is valid for 150 compensation days.
In addition, you can choose to take out a voluntary supplementary insurance policy, which gives you compensation for a further 150 days, i.e. 300 days in total.
The new legislation means that income insurance benefits will also be reduced over time in line with the new unemployment insurance rules.
The reduction will take place as follows:
