We represent professions such as Geology, Geography, Meteorology, Oceanography, GIS, Seismology, Geodesy, Hydrology, Geotechnics and Geophysics. The Geosciences Section works to protect and support the interests of the profession and to ensure that today's and tomorrow's Europe makes responsible use of the Earth's natural resources.
Members of the Geosciences Section must have a geoscience degree and/or work in the geosciences sector. Membership costs SEK 10 per month and is offered through Naturvetarna, but is also open to non-union members and to people who are members of other trade unions. As a student, membership of the Geosektionen is free.
What does the Geosektionen do?
The Geosciences Section generally works to promote the importance of geoscience professions to society and to foster links between schools, universities and the labor market. Society today faces a number of challenges that require professional skills in the geosciences. These include access to renewable energy, analysis and prevention of natural hazards, and sustainable use of natural resources. The Geosciences Section sees an increasing demand for geoscientists from the labor market and we collaborate with several universities and student associations to support the re-growth and supply of skills in geoscience professions.
We want geology and geoscience to become a natural part of social planning, not least in municipalities and county administrative boards. We want to help ensure that the professional geoscience skills required for green transition and long-term sustainable mining continue to be available in Sweden. We have our ear to the ground to listen to what is happening in society and at the political level regarding geological issues. This can apply to everything from natural risks and infrastructure decisions to sustainable production of raw materials that are critical for green energy and climate transition.
Our focus areas are:
- To create interfaces between universities and the labor market by promoting contacts between professionals and students, nationally and internationally.
- Spreading knowledge about geology and other geosciences - already in primary school.
- To better align geoscience education with the demands of the labor market.

Geologist of the Year
Geologist of the Year is a prize awarded by the Geosciences Section once a year. To be nominated, you must be a person who has advanced the position of geology in society in a positive and meritorious way. The prize money is SEK 10 000.
Nominations are announced in the first quarter of each year and must be made in writing to the Geosektionens Board. The motivation must include a brief summary of the candidate's professional development, the person's current position and how the person over time has contributed to promoting the status of geology in society beyond what can be considered as ordinary service.
Geologist of the Year is usually organized in collaboration with the Geological Society External link. and is a good opportunity to make contacts and network. The event is usually held in November, starting with award ceremonies and lectures and ending with a dinner. We try to move around and visit different places.
Geosection annual meeting
The Geosection's annual meeting is held by v17, usually in April. Usually we are in a university town and usually start with lectures, often we have a dinner afterwards and sometimes an excursion is held.
The Geosection's Annual Meeting 2024 was held on Thursday, April 11 at Geocentrum, Uppsala University in collaboration with the student association GRUS External link.. This year's theme was energy storage, a prerequisite for green transition and the lectures were very well attended. Three lectures touching on different aspects were given by Björn Lund, Maria Ask and Yuliya Zhuk. About twenty members ended the evening with a very nice dinner at Hotel Kraemer.
Geology Day
Geology Day takes place on the second Saturday in September each year. The event is organized by the non-profit association Geology Day, which aims to arouse curiosity and show the benefits that knowledge of geology and geoscience brings to society. The Geology Section supports events organized in conjunction with Geology Day as both associations work towards the same goal. The Geosciences Section also regularly organizes additional events, webinars and lectures on topical geoscience themes to raise interest and illustrate the need for geology and geoscience in society. European Federation of Geologists
The Geosciences Section is an active member of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), which represents over 45,000 geologists in Europe. Through the European Geologist title (EurGeol), the EFG offers a voluntary certification that guarantees a high level of professional experience and relevant training. In Sweden, certification is required for certain tasks in the mining industry, but abroad, certification requirements are also common in other Geoscience professions.
The EFG works to promote the geoscience profession at both European and international level, including by raising relevant issues with the EU and its member states. Through the EFG's collaboration with geoscience professional associations both within the EU and on other continents, we contribute to free mobility in an international labor market through mutual recognition of certified professional titles.
Within Europe, the EurGeol title is commonly used and internationally there are a number of equivalent certifications of professional geoscientists. EurGeol can be applied in all areas of geoscience work and can provide opportunities for professional development and career progression. The Geosciences Section can provide its members with advice and some support in the application process.
