Naturvetarna’s income insurance complements the unemployment insurance fund (a-kassan) if you become involuntarily unemployed.
It is an important supplement, as the unemployment insurance fund only compensates 80 per cent of incomes up to SEK 34,000 per month.
With the income insurance you can receive:
- Up to 80 per cent of your income qualifying for a-kassa, up to SEK 100,000 gross per month.
- Compensation for a total of 150 benefit days.
In addition, you may choose to take out a voluntary supplementary insurance, which provides compensation for a further 150 days – a total of 300 days.
Please note that you must also be a member of Akademikernas a-kassa to be covered by the income insurance. The unemployment insurance fund is not included in your Naturvetarna membership.
Reduction of compensation
The income insurance compensation will be gradually reduced over time in line with the new a-kassa rules (from 1 October 2025).
The reduction follows this schedule:

Terms and conditions of the income insurance
To receive compensation from the income insurance, you must have been a member of both Naturvetarna and the unemployment insurance fund for an uninterrupted period of one year during the twelve months prior to becoming unemployed. If you were covered by another union’s income insurance, that period may be credited towards the qualification period, provided it directly precedes your membership in Naturvetarna.

Purchase voluntary supplementary insurance
Add an extra 150 days of income protection for a total of 300 days, or extend your cover if you earn more than SEK 100,000 per month. This provides increased security and gives you more time to secure new employment – particularly valuable in a weak labour market or during an economic downturn.
