An occupational injury or disease can involve both physical and mental problems. An occupational injury is defined as a personal injury caused by, for example
- an accident at work
- an accident while traveling to or from work
- certain infections and occupational diseases caused by harmful effects at work
It is the social insurance office that assesses whether it is an occupational injury.
You must always report an occupational injury to your employer, who in turn reports it to the Social Insurance Agency. If for some reason the employer does not make a report, you can do so yourself. Once the report has been made, you apply separately for compensation for the injury.
Compensation for occupational injury is different from compensation for other sick leave.
