The salary review must take place every year and is a dialogue between you and the manager who has the mandate to determine your salary. Your manager takes the initiative for the salary review.
During the appraisal, you follow up on the year's results compared to the objectives set in the previous appraisal/development or performance review. It is therefore important that there are clear and measurable objectives documented from this.
Pay criteria
This may be formulated differently in different workplaces, but the employer should be clear about what affects the salary and how you can influence it. The employer usually develops pay criteria together with the local trade unions.
Targets should be set
Targets for the next year are set, both business and personal. What is needed to achieve the goals? This could be anything from a new computer to skills development.
Your manager and you will then agree on a new salary. It is also possible to set salary targets for one or a few years ahead and look at how you will develop during that time to reach the target.
It is important that there are clear and measurable goals documented from previous salary and performance reviews in order to be able to follow these up during the salary review.
The salary discussion should take place with the salary-setting manager. If the manager with whom you have a salary discussion does not have the mandate to set your salary, you can consider him or her as an "ambassador" for you to the higher salary-setting manager.
Individual salary setting
The salary discussion is not just a formality. Our statistics show that those who have salary discussions with individual salary setting also receive more in salary, compared to workplaces where all employees receive the same percentage increase.
Saco has looked at salary discussions over time and found that salary discussions are of greater importance for women than men when it comes to increasing salary. Salary discussions for women make a difference to pay and thus help to close the gender pay gap.
We are convinced that well conducted salary reviews are of paramount importance to get and keep the commitment, sense of responsibility and creativity of employees.
