Being a local shop steward means that you
- represent your colleagues in discussions with the employer about, for example, working conditions and the pay process.
- have a mandate to influence and represent Naturvetarna in the workplace.
- can pick up on issues that are important for the trade union to take up centrally.
You do not need any prior knowledge to become an elected representative. The important thing is your commitment and a willingness to learn. We offer trade union training, advice and support so that you are confident in your role.
Get involved in your local trade union
If your workplace already has a local trade union, you can get involved by being elected to the local trade union's board.
Show that you are interested in getting involved by contacting the board, attending membership meetings and even talking to the election committee about your willingness to stand in the next election and why.
If you are not sure whether you have a local trade union at your workplace, you can contact us and ask.
Starting a local trade union
If there is not already a local trade union in your workplace, you and your colleagues can start one. The prerequisite is that you are members of Naturvetarna or another Saco union and that there are at least three people on the board.
If the employer has a collective agreement, you are covered by the Act on Shop Stewards and have the right to work on trade union issues during paid working hours. If the employer does not have a collective agreement, you do not have this right, but you can of course work to ensure that the employer obtains a collective agreement. This is also in the employer's interest!
If you are intrerested by starting a local trade union, you can contact us and ask.
